Madera man was victim in fatal hit-and-run crash, coroner says. There’s also a reward

The Madera County Coroner’s Office has named the victim of a fatal hit-and-run crash, and the California Highway Patrol said Thursday there’s a reward for information on the case.

A driver officers say may have caused the crash in Madera County on May 10 fled the scene that ended with a motorcyclist dead, according to the CHP.

The 65-year-old man on a motorcycle was Roberto Rivera Meza of Madera, the coroner’s office said.

He was riding east on Avenue 9 approaching Highway 99 around 11:30 a.m. that day when a car entered his path, CHP said.

The driver was leaving the highway and turned left in front of the motorcycle, CHP said. Meza avoided the crash, never actually striking the car, but the evasive action caused him to be thrown from the bike, CHP said.

He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he died. Officers said he was wearing a helmet.

The driver of the car involved left the scene headed east, CHP said, and could face charges related to hit-and-run or manslaughter.

CHP said Thursday they are looking for the driver of a 2005-2010 Volkswagen Jetta and the driver of what officers said is a van, possibly a Chrysler Pacifica or Honda Odyssey.

Anyone with information can could receive a $2,000 reward from Valley Crime Stoppers, CHP says.

Tipsters can remain anonymous at www.valleycrimestoppers.org or 559-498-7867 (498-STOP).
