Man driving in Madera County killed after car hits tree and is torn in half, CHP says

A man was killed in Madera County after his car was ripped in two against a tree, the California Highway Patrol said Tuesday.

The 28-year-old man was driving a 1989 Nissan 240X at a high rate of speed just before midnight Monday northbound on Highway 99 where it meets Highway 152, CHP said.

The Mountain View man in the fatal crash has not been named pending notification of next of kin.

As he transferred from 99 to west 152 he lost control of the car, sending into the dirt and grass shoulder, CHP said. The car began spinning and the rear of the Nissan hit a eucalyptus tree, officers said, sheering the car in half.

The man was killed in the crash, CHP said. The car had an automatic shoulder seatbelt, but the driver was not wearing the lap belt.
