Girl hurt in Fresno highway crash dies from injuries, coroner says. She was 11 years old

An 11-year-old girl has died from her injuries in a Fresno-area crash after fighting for her life in a hospital for about three weeks, the Fresno County Coroner’s Office said Monday.

Rylee Munsel of Tuolomne was riding with four family members in a Toyota Corolla on Highway 99 near the Clinton Avenue exit about 5 p.m. April 1 when the car was rear-ended by a Dodge truck, the California Highway Patrol said.

The driver of the Dodge did not notice that the vehicles in front of him had either drastically slowed down or even stopped because of rush-hour traffic, CHP said.

As a result, the Dodge truck driver sideswiped two vehicles before hitting the Toyota, CHP said.

Rylee was taken to Community Regional Medical Center and succumbed to her injuries April 19, the coroner’s office said Monday. All of her family members went to the same hospital.

CHP at the time said two other children in the backseat of the Corolla were critically injured. In addition, the parents in the front seats of the Corolla suffered major to moderate injuries.

Those inside the two other vehicles hit by the Dodge truck were not injured, CHP said.

The Dodge truck driver sustained minor injuries. He was not arrested. CHP said the truck driver was not under the influence of any substance at the time of the crash.
