Fresno fire burns building with 40-foot flames, crews say. A business was evacuated

A building in central Fresno was destroyed overnight by flames that reached as high as 40 feet, firefighters said Friday.

A caller reported the blaze about 4:30 a.m. in a commercial building on Pine near Maple avenues, Battalion Chief Bob Camp said.

Crews could see the flames at least a mile out as they raced to the fire, he said.

The building was gutted and the roof came down as fire crews fought the flames, Camp said.

Commercial buildings on the east and west sides and homes on the north were in danger, but crews kept the flames from spreading, he said.

No one is believed to have been in the building and would not have survived if they were, Camp said. One neighboring business had to be evacuated of a couple of employees.

It was not immediately clear if the building was in use, according to the fire department.
