Fresno-area student dies in motorcycle crash, police say. He was weeks from graduating

A Madera High School student died Wednesday morning in a solo motorcycle crash, police said.

Officers were called to the scene on Olive Avenue near Sixth Street in Madera just after midnight where they found Roberto Lopez, who died from his injuries in the crash, police said.

No other vehicles were involved and it appears that Lopez struck the median on Olive, causing the crash, police said.

Lopez, 19, was a student-athlete at Madera High School who hoped to continue his education, police said. He played for the Coyotes football team as a defensive lineman, according to Bee records.

As a senior, he was a few weeks short of graduation.

Madera High School staff brought grief counselors to campus Thursday to support the students, police said.

“We send our condolences to Roberto’s family and friends and ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they grieve,” police said in a Facebook post.
