10 displaced by Fresno fire that damaged apartment. It may be arson, investigators say

Ten people were displaced by a fire late Wednesday in what investigators are calling a potential arson in central Fresno.

A report first came in about 11:15 p.m. for what firefighters discovered was multiple garages ablaze at an apartment at Brown Avenue and Fresno Street, south of Shields Avenue, according to Battalion Chief Devin McGuire.

The flames in the attached garages affected four apartment units, so a total of 10 people, including two children, were displaced for the night, he said. The garages in the apartment building are connected to electrical wiring for power to the units.

No injuries were reported from the fire, though one man was transported by ambulance because of potentially pre-existing medical conditions not related to the fire, McGuire said.

Authorities were looking into arson on Wednesday. “We’ve had multiple fires in the area and, apparently, multiple fires at this location,” McGuire said. “So right now it’s under investigation.”

Eight engines, three trucks, two battalion chiefs and a safety officer responded to the call for help, officials said. The Red Cross was asked to help those displaced find a place to stay at least for one night.
