Update: Fresno man identified as victim in fatal crash into tree near Kearney Park

A 28-year-old Fresno man died late Sunday when his truck struck a palm tree, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The driver, who CHP identified as Felipe Quintero Ochoa, was headed west on Kearney near Garfield avenues about 11:20 p.m. Sunday before the fatal crash near Kearney Park, CHP said.

He allowed his 2021 Chevrolet Silverado to veer to the right and into the dirt shoulder before striking the palm tree head-on, CHP said. The truck had major front end damage.

Officers believe he fell asleep at the wheel, and said the truck showed he never stepped on the brakes, according to CHP.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to CHP.
