Driver killed after hitting guardrail along Highway 99 in Fresno is ID’d by authorities
The driver killed in a single-car crash on southbound Highway 99 was identified Saturday as Juan Palomares Zuniga, 31, of Fresno.
The California Highway Patrol said Zuniga was driving a 2001 Ford Crown Victoria about 10 p.m. Friday when the car drifted onto the right shoulder, north of Clinton Avenue.
The car smashed into a metal guardrail, which went through the car and impaled the driver, according to the CHP.
Zuniga died at the scene. His body had to be extracted from the car by Fresno city firefighters.
CHP spokesman Lt. Mike Salas said alcohol is suspected as being a factor in the crash.
