Driver dies in Fresno Highway 99 crash. The gruesome discovery made by CHP officers

Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in a single-car crash that killed a driver on southbound Highway 99 in central Fresno on Friday night.

California Highway Patrol spokesman Mike Salas said the crash happened about 10:10 p.m. north of Clinton Avenue.

Salas said that for an unknown reason, the driver allowed his 2001 Ford Crown Victoria to drift onto the right shoulder. The car hit a metal guardrail that went through the car and impaled the driver, who died at the scene.

Fresno city firefighters had to extricate the driver from the car.

The driver, who has not been identified, was the only person in the car and alcohol is suspected to be a factor, Salas said.

The investigation is ongoing.
