Deadly head-on collision on Fresno County road after driver tries to pass vehicles, CHP says

Two people were killed in a violent head-on collision Friday night near Sanger, with one of the bodies still needing to be extricated hours later because the vehicle was so badly demolished.

The collision happened around 6 p.m. in the area of Belmont and Zediker avenues.

California Highway Patrol said a driver in a white Toyota Camry attempted to pass two vehicles at once by entering the lane of oncoming traffic.

In the process, the Camry driver, who was traveling at an unknown speed, crashed head-on into a silver Toyota Corolla that was traveling westbound at 65 mph, Lt. Mike Salas said.

Both drivers died. It was not immediately known whether there were other occupants in either vehicle.

CHP said the deceased driver of the white Camry was a 41-year-old man from Kingsburg.

There was little information about the driver of the Corolla with the body still trapped inside the crushed car around 9:30 p.m., according to CHP.

Salas said CHP still is trying to determine if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash.
