Contracted Amazon employee critically injured in Fresno crash shortly after leaving facility

Fresno police

A man was in critical condition Tuesday evening after a two-vehicle collision in southeast Fresno.

It happened at 6:15 p.m. at East Florence and South Cedar avenues.

The man, an Amazon-contracted employee who had left the facility before the crash, was driving a black Chevrolet and heading into the northbound lanes of Cedar when the driver of a black Kia sedan struck the victim’s vehicle, Fresno Police Lt. Sean Biggs said.

Police said both vehicles crossed both lanes of traffic and ended up on the west curb line.

The Amazon-contracted employee, who is 23, was pinned inside before the Fresno Fire Department extricated him from the vehicle. He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and was in critical condition with severe head injuries, Biggs said.

The driver of the Kia appeared to be uninjured. However, three of his passengers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Biggs said there was a strong odor of alcohol beverage coming from the Kia. The Kia driver, identified as Israel Douglas, was booked into Fresno County jail on charges of felony DUI causing great bodily injury and driving while unlicensed.
