Man seriously hurt after fall down Sierra National Forest waterfall east of Fish Camp

A 31-year-old Oakhurst man was rescued late Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 26, after falling down a waterfall in the Sierra National Forest, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies received a call around 4 p.m. of a man who had fallen in the area of Big Sandy Campground.

Deputies said the man was swimming in the area of Jackson Swimming Hole, east of Tenaya Lodge in Fish Camp when he slipped and fell.

A crew hiked 1 mile to the area to locate him, then used a rope system to cross the creek and pull him 400 feet to the roadway.

A California Highway Patrol assisted in the rescue and the man was airlifted to Community Regional Medical Center after suffering major injuries, deputies said.

Several agencies assisted in the rescue.
