Fresno County adds 337 COVID-19 cases as state closes bars. Jail has more than 500 cases
Fresno County reported another 337 positive cases of the coronavirus on Monday, bringing the total to 4,811 cases since the pandemic began.
The new cases are the latest Fresno County has reported since Saturday. No new deaths related to the virus were added Monday to the 72 tallied since March.
During the weekend, Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered bars closed in seven counties, including Fresno, Tulare and Kings in the central San Joaquin Valley, due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases.
Fresno County Jail has had its own difficulty keeping the spread down inside a building full of people in tight quarters.
A total of 507 inmates have tested positive for COVID-19, as well as 25 correctional officers and a deputy who works in courtrooms, according to Tony Botti, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson. That’s nearly 400 more inmates than first reported on Thursday.
Tulare County officials said they have seen 124 deaths through Monday, which was two more than on Friday. The county added 167 positive cases to the running list, which has now reached 3,872 cases.
Kings County separates its numbers into three sections: residents, inmates and nursing home patients.
The county reported a new death and 138 new positive cases among residents, which beings those totals to nine and 1,128, respectively. The prisons counted 10 new cases but no new deaths among its new total of 1,138 positive cases and three deaths. Nursing facilities did not add any new cases to its total of 128, but the number of deaths rose by four to reach 17.
Merced County reported 154 cases to bring the total to 978 since the beginning of the pandemic. Officials did not add any deaths on Monday to the 11 previously reported on Friday.
Merced County on Monday was added to the California Department of Public Health’s list of counties being monitored due to increased coronavirus numbers.
Madera County tallied 73 cases and no new deaths on Monday compared to Friday, which makes for a total of 488 positive cases and five deaths, respectively.
Mariposa County continues to have low numbers with 25 positive cases and a single death through Monday. That’s two more positive cases and no new deaths since Friday.
