Mural tour 2020: Black Lives, George Floyd, nurses and more get full Fresno treatment

Kyle Richard is a big fan of murals.

Known to radio listeners as DJ Kay Rich on Q97, he came up with the idea of having a series of murals pop up in Fresno dedicated to Black Lives Matter, George Floyd, medical workers and more in what is dubbed the “Lift Every Voice Mural Tour.”

“There are multiple ways to protest,” Richard said. “My job is to provide different people with organized platforms in order to protest in the way they want to protest. This protest is through the arts.”

Richard partnered with Dulce Upfront, a community multimedia business in central Fresno, to create the different murals with the help of various local artists.

The first went up over the weekend with artists painting “Black Lives Matter” at H and Inyo streets, across from the right-field corner of Chukchansi Park.

Here is when and where other murals are planned:

June 16: George Floyd mural and candlelight vigil, 5 p.m. at 1243 Fulton St.

June 20-21: Black and Brown Unity/Isiah Murrietta-Golding (who died in a Fresno police officer-involved shooting) and candlelight vigil, starting at 8 a.m. at 4403 Tulare Ave.

June 20: Fresno For Black Trans Lives, 2 p.m. at 575 Divisadero St.

June 22: Gabriel Hernandez/nurses for COVID-19 and candlelight vigil, 5 p.m. at 725 N. Fresno St.

June 26-30: Chinatown, 1540 Kern Street at 2 p.m.

“We needed to do something for the city,” Richard said. “So many different areas are painting murals of Black Lives Matter in locations throughout different cities, and we need to do that as well to show that we stay united with the rest of the cities in that Black Lives Matter.”
