Firefighters save cats after garage fire breaks out in southeast Fresno

Firefighters were able to save two cats, one with a resuscitator, after a garage fire broke out Sunday night in southeast Fresno.

A fire spokesman said the blaze broke out in the 5200 block of East Grant Avenue, where flames estimated to be 20 feet in length were shooting out of the garage.

Loud explosions were heard from the garage due to the detonation of material inside, including small arms ammunition, black powder and propane tanks. Homeowners were alerted to the blaze by smoke detectors.

Firefighters found two cats inside, one unconscious from smoke inhalation. The animal was revived by the resuscitator and turned over to the owners of the home.

The cause of the fire and the amount of damage were under investigation.
