A Fresno County man serving time at a state prison in Kern County walked away from the minimum support facility on May 15.

California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials are looking for 37-year-old Flavio Carbajal.

He was reported missing from Kern Valley State Prison in Delano around 7:30 p.m. Friday after an emergency count at the prison confirmed his absence, CDCR said in a news release.

Prison officials immediately notified local law enforcement agencies, launched into a crisis response and dispatched safety agents to try to find Carbajal.

Carbajal arrived to Wasco State Prison from Fresno County in October 2018 to serve a six-year sentence for corporal injury resulting in trauma. He was transferred to Kern Valley State Prison a year ago.

Kern Valley State Prison is a maximum security institution which also houses a lower security minimal support facility for inmates who help maintain the prison grounds. Carbajal was incarcerated in the lower level facility, Lt. John Melvin said.

The current currently houses 3,800 inmates.

CDCR described Carbajal as a Hispanic man with short black hair and brown eyes. He’s about 5-foot-10 and 225 pounds with visible tattoos on his face. Anyone who sees Carbajal or knows his whereabouts should contact law enforcement or call 911, CDCR said.
