Pedestrian killed crossing Shields in central Fresno is identified

A person crossing East Shields Avenue at North Maroa Avenue in central Fresno died Thursday night after being struck by a car, police reported.

The Fresno County Coroner’s Office said the victim was Isaac Romero, 27, of Fresno. The coroner’s office said Romero’s official ID lists him as male, but Romero self-identified as transgender.

The collision took place about 9:15 p.m. Police spokesman Sgt. Jeff La Blue said officers arrived to find Romero in the right lane of westbound Shields. The driver told officers that he did not see Romero, who was crossing south to north, until Romero was in front of his vehicle and could not avoid Romero. The driver remained at the scene and did not appear to be impaired, said La Blue.
