Driver tells police woman darted in front of him on Fresno street. She died at hospital

A woman was struck and killed by a vehicle in central Fresno on Thursday night.

According to Fresno police Lt. Bill Dooley, officers were called just before 9:30 p.m. to the area of Shields and Maroa avenues, where they found the woman lying in the road.

The driver who struck the woman told officers he had been traveling west on Shields when the woman abruptly ran across the street and into his path.

The woman was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

No details were provided of the woman’s age or background.

The driver was not suspected of being under the influence, Dooley said.
