Rescuers find injured Fresno teen alive in Utah mountains
A Fresno teen who spent the night in frigid conditions in the Utah mountains was found alive Friday afternoon by rescuers, according to the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake.
The 17-year-old boy, identified as Nicolas by ABC4 News in Salt Lake City, was taken to the hospital in serious condition with damage to his feet, according to police spokesperson Ken Hansen.
The teen was found about six to eight miles from the entrance of the Rattlesnake Gulch area with help from a helicopter and a search and rescue team, Hansen said.
The boy had traveled with his mother from Fresno to Utah, the Associated Press reported.
The boy took an Uber to Millcreek Canyon on Thursday morning to take a hike, Hansen said. The Uber driver helped police pinpoint the location he was dropped off, which aided rescuers, Hansen said.
According to ABC4, the teen was reported missing after he didn’t meet a friend in Park City on Thursday night as scheduled.
It was around 9 degrees overnight in the area, Hansen said, and the boy was in “really good shape,” considering the weather.
Police were not releasing the boy’s name due to his age.
Millcreek Canyon is east of metro Salt Lake City.
