A Fresno State exhibition will highlight the artwork of former Bee illustrator and current Fresno State professor Doug Hansen.

“Bookends” will run from Jan. 25 through Feb. 22 in the school’s Art and Design Department, according to a university press release.

Hansen, who worked for two decades as a newsroom artist at The Bee, will give an artist’s talk in the Conley Art Lecture Hall at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 25. A reception will follow from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Phebe Conley Gallery. Both events are free and open to the public.

Hansen’s career emerged from his days as student at Fresno State’s art department in the early 70s, where his cartoons and comics ran in the then-daily student newspaper, The Collegian, , university spokeswoman Lisa Boyles said in the release. After his career at The Bee, Hansen returned to Fresno State as a full-time faculty member and eventually became a professor of illustration.

The exhibition will include Hansen’s illustrations from his years at The Bee in the 80s and 90s, and examples of his early work that have never been exhibited before, Boyles said.

A Fresno native, Hansen holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art from Fresno State and was awarded the Graduate Dean’s Medal in 2001. He is a professor emeritus in graphic design in the Art and Design Department.

Hansen, along with his mother and two brothers, created the river mural seen at the Woodward Park Regional Library, Boyles said.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and a parking pass for the artist’s talk on Jan. 25 is available by entering 262829 at a parking kiosk.
