Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Tulare, praised the appointment of former FBI director Robert Mueller as special counsel to oversee the investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Mueller was appointed Wednesday by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

“I strongly support this decision, and I commend Deputy U.S. Attorney General Rosenstein for his leadership,” Nunes said in a statement. “This is the right decision at the right time, and the right man was chosen for the job. Robert Mueller is a highly respected former FBI director who has tremendous integrity, and I’m confident he will lead a credible investigation.”

Nunes is chair of the House Intelligence Committee, which is doing its own investigation. Nunes, a supporter of President Donald Trump and member of his transition team, removed himself from the investigation after an ethics complaint that he improperly handled classified information.
