Community spread of coronavirus in Fresno County continues to rise

Fresno County saw another big jump in its daily count of coronavirus cases with 17 new positives test of COVID-19, the county’s Department of Public Health reported Thursday.

That brings Fresno County’s total to 173 cases of the novel coronavirus.

In addition, the number of COVID-19 cases contracted via community spread jumped significantly with a daily increase of 15.

Community spread, in some ways, is considered perhaps the most alarming way to contract the coronavirus because it isn’t exactly clear how a person was infected.

The individual will have tested positive without having traveled or having no contact with someone who’s tested positive.

Fresno County interim health officer Dr. Rais Vohra characterized community spread as “the most dire case of an epidemic because it’s the hardest to contain.”

And in nine days this month, the number of community spread infections in Fresno County has increased from 11 cases at the end of March to 58 cases as of Thursday.

The figures updated on the health department’s website also states 37 of the 173 cases with patients being hospitalized.

There have been three deaths and 10 recoveries (those who’ve been laboratory cleared or cleared by non-laboratory methods) in Fresno County.
