Modesto police have arrested a suspect in a homicide investigation stemming from a body discovered April 9 near the Neece boat ramp at the Tuolumne River near John Thurman Field.

The victim, 37-year-old Juan Carreon of Modesto, was found shortly before 4 p.m. in the 700 block of Neece Drive, according to the Modesto Police Department.

Officers responded to reports of a person down near the boat ramp and located Carreon with multiple injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

Following what police described as an extensive investigation, detectives identified 41-year-old Juan Trujillo Mendoza, also of Modesto, as the suspect.

Mendoza has been arrested and booked on a murder charge, police said.

Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding the killing, including a possible motive.
