When do you legally have to use a turn signal in California?

California Vehicle Code 22108 says motorists must signal before turning or changing lanes.

“Any signal of intention to turn right or left shall be given continuously during the last 100 feet traveled by the vehicle before turning,” the law says.

Do I have to signal going through a roundabout?

According to the California Department of Transportation, when drivers approach a roundabout, they should:

  • Slow down.
  • Yield to pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Watch for signs and pavement markings.
  • Enter the roundabout when it is safe to do so.
  • Drive in a counterclockwise direction and avoid passing other vehicles.
  • Use turn signals when changing lanes or exiting the roundabout.

“If you miss your exit, continue around until you return to your exit,” Caltrans said.

Can you get a ticket for failing to signal in California?

Failing to signal when turning or changing lanes in California can result in a ticket with a $238 fine, according to Shouse California Law Group.

Drivers can also receive one point on their driving record, the law firm said.

When a driver accumulates four points on their driving record within 12 months, six points in 24 months or eight points in 36 months, it could lead to a license suspension.
