A man died at a popular California beach after witnesses rushed to try to save him but were too late, officials said.

Someone pulled him out of the surf at Esplanade Beach in Pacifica on April 19, and good Samaritans were giving the unconscious man CPR when Pacifica police arrived just after 11 a.m. on a “report of a possible drowning,” according to a news release.

He was not breathing, officials said in the release, and he was pronounced dead after first responders couldn’t revive him.

The San Mateo County coroner will determine the man’s identity and assist Pacifica police in the investigation, the release said.

Anyone with information about the case should contact the Pacifica Police Department at 650-738-7314 and refer to PPD Case 23-0972.
