LATEST: BROTHER IS SECOND SUSPECT ARRESTED
Sacramento police announced the first arrest Monday of a suspect related to Sunday’s mass shooting downtown, saying a 26-year-old man is being held on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Dandrae Martin is named as a “related suspect,” police said, and is being held without bail in the Sacramento County Main Jail on the weapons charge and a separate count of assault with a deadly weapon.
Martin also is being held on an outstanding warrant from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, jail records say.
Riverside Superior Court records show Dandrae Stephan Martin has a 2014 conviction for inflicting corporal injury on a spouse.
Martin also has 2018 convictions in Maricopa County, Arizona, for a count of criminal damage and a marijuana violation, as well as 2016 conviction of aggravated assault and domestic violence by impeding breathing, according to online records in Phoenix.
Martin is scheduled to make his first court appearance Tuesday in Sacramento.
Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert issued a statement after the arrest noting that Martin has not been charged in connection with any of the six deaths.
“This individual has not been arrested for any homicide related to this incident,” Schubert said. “The investigation is highly complex involving many witnesses, videos of numerous types and significant physical evidence.
“This is an ongoing investigation and we anticipate more arrests in this case. Our ethical obligations as prosecutors prevents us from commenting about the specifics of the case. We will be reviewing the evidence provided to our office and making a determination of what, if any, charges are appropriate. If charges are filed, the complaint will be released to the public.”
A law enforcement source said detectives are studying videos from the shooting scene at 10th and K streets where gunfire erupted at 2 a.m. Sunday, leaving six people dead and 12 others wounded, to determine how many potential shooters were involved in the incident.
Law enforcement officials believe the shooting involved exchanges of gunfire between multiple shooters on 10th Street and that the potential suspects are validated gang members, a source said.
The shooting left more than 100 shell casings at the scene.
“During the preliminary processing of the scene, investigators located at least three buildings and three vehicles that had been struck by gunfire,” police said in a statement Monday. “Additionally, investigators recovered over 100 expended shell casings at the scene.”
Police also said detectives and SWAT teams have served search warrants at three homes and seized at least one handgun.
