5.5 magnitude earthquake rattles Southern California, USGS reports

A 5.5 magnitude earthquake rocked Southern California Wednesday evening, United States Geological Survey reported.

The earthquake hit south of Searles Valley, California, at 6:32 p.m. and was felt in Los Angeles and across Southern California and Nevada, authorities said.

There have been more than 30 earthquakes in the past 24 hours in Southern California, according to Earthquake Track, and nearly 100 in the past seven days.

About five earthquakes with magnitudes between 5.0 and 6.0 happen every year in California and Nevada, according to the Los Angeles Times

Many reported that Wednesday’s earthquake rattled their homes and buildings.

“Violent shake, lasted longer than any 5 I’ve experienced,” one person in Ridgecrest reported to EMSC. “Everything rattled and it was very very loud.”

Some said the earthquake came on slow but lasted almost 30 seconds, according to reports.

“It felt bigger than a M5.1!” another person in Ridgecrest reported. “We’re on a solid foundation and it rocked my house like the M6.4 did last year!”
