Randy’s Donuts teases opening of Clovis shop. Here’s what we know
The long-awaited Randy’s Donuts is inching closer to opening its first location in Clovis.
The Southern-California based donut shop hasn’t released an exact opening date yet. But it says it will open in mid-December.
Randy’s Donuts is moving into the former Rita’s Italian Ice spot at 1195 Shaw Ave., suite 101, across from Sierra Vista Mall. It’s in an outbuilding close to Shaw, between Toledo’s Mexican Restaurant and Andiamo Ristorante Italiano.
Randy’s original location is in Inglewood, with a 32-foot tall donut atop the roof. It’s been featured in multiple movies and TV shows, including “Futurama” and “Iron Man 2,” where Robert Downey Jr. chomps a donut while sitting in the middle of the giant one on the roof.
The popular regional chain has traditional donuts (such as its glazed raised donut) and premium ones (such as a matcha tea donut). Randy’s Donuts also sells “Texas” donuts, which are extra-large donuts designed to feed multiple people (or not) that can have up to 1,500 calories.
One difference between Randy’s and local independent donut shops? Because Randy’s is a chain with more than 20 locations, California law requires it to post calorie counts for its donuts.
What about the other Fresno Randy’s locations?
The first Randy’s Donuts location opened in April at 2369 E. Shaw Ave. across from Fresno State.
The last to open will be the location at the northeast corner of Palm and Bullard avenues. It’s been in the works for months behind the car wash.
A Randy’s representative did not have an update on when that location would open.
The location is still in the permitting process, according to a check with the City of Fresno’s Planning Department. The donut shop received zoning approval, and an application to remodel the former Regency Cleaners spot was accepted in November of last year.
But a bill sent for $2,670.72 in plan check fees more than a year ago has not been paid, preventing the process from moving forward, according to a city spokeswoman.
