5 new businesses coming to this Clovis corner, from chains to local mom-and-pops
Construction is about to start on what will become a few big popular chains and a locally owned restaurant and coffee shop in Clovis.
Near Highway 168 and Temperance Avenue, the strip center will be built just north of Owens Mountain Parkway. It’s a continution of the Sunrise Pavillion Development at Technology Business Park that already has an existing Starbucks, McDonald’s and Indian restaurant.
Developer/owner Bottom Line Group expects to break ground on the new portion in the first week of November. The businesses are expected to open by fall of next year.
So what will open there?
New stores/restaurants
A 7-Eleven will open in a stand-alone building. It will be a different prototype than others around town: bigger and with a bakery.
It will also have gas and diesel fuel pumps.
Behind the 7-Eleven will be a building housing four businesses.
One will be a Chipotle.
The location will have a drive-thru. The “Chipotlanes” aren’t like typical drive-thrus you’d find at a McDonald’s.
Instead of pulling up and ordering every ingredient in your burrito bowl (which could take a while), the Chipotlane is only for picking up orders made online. The digital orders customers make from their phones or computers will be ready when they arrive at the Chipotlane.
Locally owned restaurant Phoenician Garden Mediterranean Bar and Grill will open a second location on the corner. It will be the first time the popular Mediterranean restaurant, at Herndon Avenue and First Street, has had a second restaurant since it opened in 2001.
This one will be quite different, however. Instead of full service with servers, it will be called Phoenician Express and customers will order at a counter.
It will seat about 20 people.
The restaurant will mostly focus on takeout, trying to get a piece of the DoorDash delivery happening in Clovis, said Tarek Hmaidan, who is partnering with Jack Toutikian to open the new location.
“We’re going to be making the same kind of food we do here, but it’s going to be more express,” he said.
The menu will be streamlined. It will include the top-selling spicy chicken, available in plates, bowls, wraps and salads. The popular beef kebabs and many other dishes will be available too.
Although the restaurant won’t open until well into next year, Hmaidan and Toutikian are excited.
“Dad started this one,” Hmaidan said. “As I grew up, I just wanted to open something for myself and expand it.”
Kuppa Joy Coffee
A Kuppa Joy coffee shop is also headed for the spot.
The coffee shop — whose slogan is to “Love God. Love People. Love Coffee.” — is owned by former NFL Detroit Lions linebacker Zack Follett. It has five cafes from Clovis to Kingsburg and three “joy thrus” (its version of a drive-thru) from Madera to Visalia.
Follett was not immediately available for comment, but if this Kuppa Joy is anything like the others, it will sell its signature Kuppa Joy mocha drink made with dark chocolate and sweet cream. The other locations also have limited food options, such as pastries and breakfast items.
Most locations also feature a giant throne, a nod to the throne of judgement mentioned in Revelation in the Bible.
One 1,800-square-foot space is left in the building. The developers are deciding among an ice cream shop, a nail salon, a medical office or other businesses, said Jay Virk, president and CEO of the Bottom Line Group.
“We’re just trying to figure out what’s the best fit for the neighborhood there and then we’ll decide,” he said.
The Bottom Line Group has built and runs several other developments around town, including Starbucks and the Street Corner Urban Market at Campus Pointe and the Hyatt Place hotel planned for Clovis Avenue north of Highway 168 that will have a rooftop restaurant and bar.
The company also opened a new 7-Eleven on Clovis Avenue across from Fancher Creek last week.
