South of Shaw brewery to open a Clovis location. But it’s not south of Shaw

No, they’re not geographically confused.

The people behind South of Shaw Beer Co. just found a good place to open a second location and it happened to be north of Shaw Avenue.

The brewery and pizza spot that opened in downtown Fresno’s Peerless Building three years ago is planning to open its second location in the same building as the Peacock Market at Sunnyside Avenue and Tollhouse Road in Clovis.

It’s in the very early stages. Construction work hasn’t started on the space yet, which is next door to the market in what is now an upcycled furniture store. The brewery owners are hoping to open by early summer.

That South of Shaw name has history here and stems from two things.

It’s the name of a local punk rock band from the early 2000s that brewery co-owner Dana Pellerin was in. He was the drummer.

It’s also a reference to the dividing line between the north and south of Fresno, and the difference in income and identity that often comes on either side. Some Fresno residents may caution people never to go south of Shaw. Others take pride in living south of Shaw and have no interest in going north of it.

“It means something to locals,” said brewery co-owner Douglas Dart. “A local gets it, especially if you grew up in Fresno.”

Will it keep the South of Shaw name?

So since the new Clovis location is actually two miles north of Shaw, what will it be called?

They haven’t decided exactly what it will be yet.

“It might be South of Shaw Clovis, or South of Shaw Peacock,” he said. “But we will maintain the South of Shaw name.”

The new location will be much like the original, brewing beer on site and serving pizza.

The downtown location’s most popular beer is its Flying Chancla cerveza, a Mexican lager. And although its most popular pizza is pepperoni, its the pickle pizza that gets lots of attention.

The Peacock and South of Shaw

South of Shaw is taking over the space now occupied by Reclaimed Creation, an upcycled furniture store (though that store will still be operating out of its other spot near the Mexican restaurant on the same property).

South of Shaw will install brewing tanks in a former “butcher box” where the meat cutters used to do their work at the market in a room insulated by a certain type of wood, long before giant walk-in coolers or freezers were common, said Peacock owner Ron Meyers.

Expect more windows in the front of the building and a similar vibe to the downtown brewery.

“We’re going to keep some of the same vibe,” Dart said. “We’re gonna make some good changes.”

It’s also going to tie into the Peacock Artisan Eatery.

In addition to the convenience store, the Peacock Market it now features Miguel’s Taqueria, The Pickled Deli and The Parlor, serving specialty coffee, Thrifty ice cream and more. They share a common dining area.

When South of Shaw is finished, doors from the brewery will lead into that seating area. They plan to have the place properly licensed so customers drink a beer there with their tacos, for example.

And the new South of Shaw, will be open to families and people under 21 too, Dart said.

Meyers said they’re both trying to attract families to the spot with a variety of food.

“If there’s a family ... and your son wanted Mexican, and your daughter wants a deli sandwich you can go and order all those things.”
