The last Big Lots in Fresno-Clovis area is closing. Going-out-of-business sale on now
Big Lots said it would start going-out-of-business sales at all its remaining stores nationwide.
There’s just one location of the discounter left in the Fresno area: the Clovis store on Shaw Avenue, across the street from Sierra Vista Mall.
Employees have not been give a date yet for when it will close.
The company’s website said the stores are now discounted up to 50% off.
The retailer already closed the North Blackstone location south of River Park earlier this year.
It later closed the West Shaw Avenue store in Fresno and the southeast Fresno store at Peach Avenue and Cesar Chavez Boulevard (formerly Kings Canyon Road).
Other stores up and down the Central Valley have also closed, with just 21 stores remaining in California. Remaining locations in Reedley, Madera and Tulare will also close.
Big Lots filed for bankruptcy in September.
Despite its steep discounts on everything from food to furniture, inflation hit its customers’ buying power hard. Customers pulled back on spending on big-ticket discretionary items in particular, noted President and CEO Bruce Thorn in a first-quarter earnings news release in June.
Big Lots had planned to sell itself to another company, but that deal appears to have fallen through, according to a press release Thursday from Big Lots. It is still trying to sell the company, but is moving forward with plans to close all its stores.
