This favorite Fresno deli is back. Take a look at the newly-reopened restaurant
It’s back.
Sunnyside Delicatessen is reopen, serving up Reuben sandwiches and a few new fried goodies.
The restaurant on Kings Canyon Road, east of Clovis Avenue, closed in March after 38 years, leaving some heartbroken fans in its wake.
It wasn’t long before the Husak family of Fresno bought the business and announced plans to reopen it.
After a quiet week of test runs, Sunnyside Delicatessen held its grand opening last weekend – and a ton of people showed up.
Megan Husak remembers apologizing to the people because of the wait.
“There was one lady who said, ‘We’ve been waiting for this place to open for months, I didn’t mind the wait today at all,’” she said.
Husak used to work at the restaurant occasionally during summers while in college and remembers her parents meeting friends there. She moved back to Fresno and she and her family reopened the restaurant.
It’s literally a family affair, with Husak, her parents, and several siblings running the restaurant.
“We thought, why not go on this little adventure?” she said. “We couldn’t see a place like this be lost or forgotten. We wanted to make sure it stuck around for the next generation.”
The food and drinks
Not a lot has changed at the restaurant. They did some painting and added some art to the walls, but kept the menu mostly the same.
“We want to keep the tradition of great products and quality ingredients to make the best sandwiches,” Husack said. “They did it so well so there wasn’t much for us to change.”
So the “TBA,” turkey, bacon avocado sandwich, is still on the menu. And there’s the towering “The works” sandwich, which includes pastrami, mortadella, salami, roast beef, and ham.
Something that is new?
The Husak’s added a fryer. Customers were asking for it, so now Sunnyside Deli offers french fries, garlic fries and fried cheese curds.
They also added local craft beer and wine.
For now, the restaurant is open for lunch only, but expect to some afternoon or evening hours, possibly charcuterie and wine nights, Husak said. The restaurant also does catering, including individual charcuterie cones.
