Three new thrift, vintage stores open in Fresno. Here’s where — and what they sell
If you’re a thrift shop lover, you likely love the thrill of the hunt, the sifting through castoffs to score that one perfect vintage find.
Now there’s some new places in Fresno to do just that.
A trio of new thrift and vintage stores has opened on central Blackstone. Each is a little different. There’s a traditional thrift shop and one that specializes in home decor. Another is a resale shop focused on the vintage T-shirts of bands and sports teams from the 1980s and later decades.
Here’s a look at who’s open where and what they sell.
JD’s Boutique & Thrift
Shoppers looking to decorate a home may be interested in this place.
JD’s Boutique & Thrift sells furniture – dining room tables, sectionals, a bathroom vanity with sinks – that’s both used and new. Some of it is from internet retailer Wayfair and is new furniture rejected because of small flaws or damage and sold at a discount.
Holiday decor is big here year round too. There are tables holding items for Christmas, Fourth of July, Halloween and more.
The store also has a sizable collection of clothing and purses, with much of the clothing priced at $5 and under.
The store is owned by Janet “JD” Vilhauer, who quit her job as a bookkeeper to open the store, a longtime dream. Talkative and outgoing, don’t be surprised if you end up having a conversation about life while shopping.
Details: JD’s Boutique is at 4838 N. Blackstone Ave. Hours: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
Family Tree Thrift Boutique
This store got its start on Gettysburg Avenue and recently moved to a much larger location on Blackstone Avenue in the same shopping center as Turner’s Outdoorsman and Yoshino Japanese restaurant.
Family Tree Thrift Boutique is now a 4,000-square-foot for-profit thrift store with all the typical items: Furniture, clothing, shoes, books, dishes, decor and DVDs. The store carries men’s, women’s and children’s clothing.
A sizable collection of jewelry sells mostly for $5 or less.
Some items you may not find at your typical thrift shop: PlayStation and Xbox games for $5.25 each and records for $2.50.
There are also brand new baseball jerseys from Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants.
“If somebody’s ready to go and get their own apartment and they want to fix it up cute, come here,” said owner Natalie Corral.
The store accepts donations, but Corral mostly scours various sources to buy and sell the items she carries. She sold her medical supply company to open the store.
Details: 6234 - 6436 N. Blackstone Ave. Hours: 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays though Saturdays.
Retro Park Vintage
This is no thrift shop, but a vintage shop specializing in pop culture collectibles from the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. Retro Park Vintage is the kind of place you’d get a gift for someone really passionate about something – a sports team, band, comic, TV show, etc.
There are T-shirts and jackets from teams, commemorating various games and athletes like Barry Bonds.
There is also a full rack of music T-shirts, like NSYNC or Alicia Keys.
Most T-shirts cost between $30 and $60.
There are lots of baseball caps and collectibles, like boxed Spiderman toys.
The store is in a strip center with a barbershop and a dress store. Look for the Jurassic Park-style sign on the building.
Details: 4843 N. Blackstone Ave. Hours: Noon to 6 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays.
