Mall store in Fresno, Merced may be closing many – or all – locations, due to COVID-19
New York & Company’s parent organization is the latest retailer to file for bankruptcy, in part blaming the coronavirus pandemic and the shutdowns that came with it.
RTW Retailwinds, which owns the women’s clothing retailer, said in a statement this week that it plans to close “a significant portion, if not all, of its brick-and-mortar stores.”
It has started the store liquidation process.
The store, which mainly is located in malls, has shops in Fashion Fair mall in Fresno and Merced Mall. No one available to comment at either store.
Both malls are closed right now following the additional closures ordered by Gov. Gavin Newsom Monday in 30 counties that includes the indoor portion of the malls.
The store carried women’s professional and casual wear – including petite and tall sizes – along with jewelry and accessories.
COVID closures
The company’s CEO blamed the closures on the existing “challenging retail environment,” combined with effect of the coronavirus pandemic. COVID-19 has caused the company “significant financial distress” and is expected to continue to do so in the future.
It’s not alone. Several other chain retailers are closing stores since the coronavirus pandemic started.
Pier 1 is bankrupt and closing all its stores. Tuesday Morning is closing its Fresno and Visalia stores. Home decor store Kirkland’s plans to close its northwest Fresno location. And kitchen store Sur La Table is closing its store in River Park.
