Hobby Lobby is hiring as new stores get ready to open soon in Clovis and Fresno

Hobby Lobby in Clovis is hiring – which means it’s one step closer to opening.

The popular craft and home decor store is taking over the former former Toys R Us at 1425 Shaw Ave. near Sunnyside Avenue.

The store is aiming for a July 10 opening, according to its district manager.

The Bee first reported Hobby Lobby’s plans back in May 2019, when the retailer said it planned to open August 2019. Clearly, that didn’t happen, and opening during a global coronavirus pandemic has likely complicated plans too.

But Hobby Lobby is pushing ahead with a hiring event several days this week.

A Facebook event post says the retailer is looking for “temporary setup help” for the store. The 55 positions start as temporary but can transition to permanent full- or part-time jobs.

Part-time jobs start at $13. Full-time jobs start at $15.70 an hour and benefits include vacation, 401(k) and medical and dental plans.

The store is accepting applications for department managers, cashiers, stockers, bookkeepers and freight receivers.

Applicants are asked to apply in person only. Face masks will be required and provided. Applicants should practice social distancing. Monday people waiting in lines six feet apart and filling out applications at opposite ends of long tables.

People who feel ill or have been recently exposed to someone with COVID-19 are asked not to attend.

The hiring events run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday, June 8 to Friday, June 12.

For now, the store is empty – with the exception of the hiring event – though shelves and other equipment is coming soon.

Hobby Lobby is planning another store in northwest Fresno, at the Marketplace at El Paseo near Highway 99 and Herndon Avenue. That one will likely open about two weeks after the Clovis store and has not started hiring yet.

The store is being built in a new phase of construction at the center.
