The holiday has a long history of celebration, with the first official National Donut Day recognized in Chicago in 1938. At that time, the holiday celebrated the Salvation Army’s Donut Lassies, women who were sent overseas to establish field bases near the front lines. Soldiers came to these bases to stock up on essential goods and grab something sweet.
Once the soldiers came home, they brought their taste for donuts with them, and in 1938, the Salvation Army established National Donut Day to honor the women who brought a morale boost to soldiers and to raise funds for those in need during the Great Depression.
For those who missed June 5th’s deals, though, don’t worry – there’s another National Donut Day coming up on November 5.
