Popular national bakery chain closes Fresno cafe. It’s not first in area to shut down
Nearly 10 years after opening its doors to much fanfare, the Corner Bakery Cafe in northeast Fresno has closed abruptly — and for good.
Workers were moving kitchen equipment out of the building Thursday afternoon while unsuspecting customers tried going inside the restaurant to place an order.
Reasons for the sudden closure, which went into effect last week, were not immediately known. Calls made to the restaurant were not answered.
“It’s been our pleasure being on your corner,” signs taped on the Fresno Corner Bakery Cafe windows read. “Unfortunately, our Fresno Cafe has permanently closed its doors.
“We hope to see you at one of our other locations.”
The restaurant’s closure follows what happened when the same owners of the Corner Bakery in Visalia decided to close that location in September 2024.
At the moment, there are no other Corner Bakery cafes in the central San Joaquin Valley.
In January, The Bee reported that the Corner Bakery Cafe was planning to open a location in Clovis at the Loma Vista Marketplace near Shaw and Leonard avenues, according to the city.
It’s unclear if that opening will still occur. City officials said they were unaware of any changes to the plans.
Corner Bakery Cafe is a national chain headquartered in Dallas and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Among its popular items were the chicken pesto sandwich, rustic Italian panini and a variety of pasta and salad dishes, and, of course, its collection of pastries and baked goods.
The Corner Bakery Cafe in Fresno opened in 2016, around the same time that the entire Park Crossing Shopping Center that’s located along Friant Road between Fresno Avenue and First Street debuted. The shopping complex is perhaps most known for its anchor tenants Trader Joe’s and Heirloom restaurant.
In May 2025, the Fresno Corner Bakery held a grand re-opening with giveaways and a community fundraiser, following renovations at the location that was “part of a system-wide refresh strategy,” the national chain said then.
“Every time I went in there, there were a lot of people in there,” said loyal customer Michael Blount. “The food was good and healthy. From a scale of 1 to 10 of how surprised I am, I’d say an 8.
“They had a lot of foot traffic in this area. Just shocked. Got a lot of people who go there for coffee, or breakfast or lunch in general. Not sure where we’re all going to go now.”
