Got late-night munchies? Here are 5 places in Fresno to eat at around midnight

While it’s tough to find late-night dining options in Fresno, Richie’s Pizza & Hot Dogs in the Tower District stays open until 2:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. No indoor seating is available but the pizzeria did build an eating area along the sidewalk during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Whether you’re a night owl looking for food after partying or someone who works late and gets hungry deep into the night, eating after hours can be a challenge in Fresno.

Especially if you’re trying to avoid fast food and don’t feel like cooking.

Dine-in options around town are slim past 9 p.m. Trying to eat somewhere once the bartender has yelled “last call for alcohol” is even more difficult.

Fewer restaurants are staying open late compared to 10-plus years ago.

And those that operate as both a restaurant and bar are halting food service earlier, including a couple of popular late-night spots like the Elbow Room and The Standard.

“We used to give last call around 1 a.m. and stopped serving food about 30 minutes before then,” said longtime Elbow Room owner Mike Shirinian, whose restaurant and bar is located in Fig Garden Village. “We were busy. But it’s been a while now.

“There were less and less late-night events happening on this end of town. Then you have the California mandates of minimum wage, economically, it made sense to not be in the late-night food business anymore.”

Added Standard manager Raj Bisla: “We did offer food late into the night years ago. But we had an issue where we had people ordering food at the bar, but we couldn’t find them to give them their order. They’d move around and there would be so many people to account for.

“So things changed. We keep the kitchen open until 10:30 p.m. now.”

Meanwhile, more food trucks have emerged to help fill that late-night void.

More food trucks have emerged to meet the demand for late-night eating around Fresno. Many dine-in restaurants often close their kitchen by 9 p.m. There are a limited number of dine-in restaurants that serve food past 11 p.m.

Some camp just outside of bars and clubs, and move around for day to day. Others have a consistent location, such as at a gas station parking lot.

“When people done a little drinking, done a little dancing and got the munchies, that’s why I’m here,” said a hot dog vendor named Lerch.

His business, Kingglizzy559, specializes in bacon-wrapped hot dogs and often is set up at various corners in the Tower District.

The drawback with the majority of food truck spots, though, is they typically don’t provide seating and tables for customers to comfortably enjoy their late-night meal while it’s still hot and fresh.

Even many fast food chains that stay open late will close the lobby area and offer only drive-thru service.

So where can someone go for late-night dining in Fresno?

Here are five places to consider eating when you’ve got only an hour left before midnight.

BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse

Location: 715 E. Shaw Ave.

Can get food as late as: 11 to 11:30 p.m.

Sports bar restaurants definitely are solid choices for late-night food, while also enjoying a more upbeat atmosphere.

Plus, BJ’s doesn’t just offer pizza and burgers. There’s a big menu and a variety of choices, including popular specialty entrees like the New Orleans Jambalaya and the Parmesan-crusted chicken.

There typically are also a few cost-friendly options like the current $13 pizookie meal deals. Customers can choose among eight options for an entree to go along with a signature Pizookie dessert.

Denny’s

Location: Eight restaurants in Fresno

Can get food as late as: Open 24 hours each day

Originally a donut shop when the first Denny’s opened in 1953 in Lakewood, Denny’s has transformed into “America’s Diner.” And in Fresno, all eight of the Denny’s locations stay open all day, while serving breakfast, lunch or dinner at any time.

Some could argue it’s the ultimate late-night joint because of the variety of foods on the menu, the in-door seating and the around-the-clock hours of operation.

Denny’s also regularly has enticing promotions, including four different “slam breakfasts” for $6.99 each.

But because not all Denny’s are created equally, there could be inconsistencies in customer experience. Some restaurants simply don’t have the staffing or offer the cleanliness late at night compared to other Denny’s locations.

But if the “Moons over My Hammy” or the “Waffle Slam” is “slappin,” some things can be overlooked.

Eureka!

Location: Two restaurants in the Fresno area, including at 7775 N. Palm Ave.

Can get food as late as: Midnight on Fridays/Saturdays

Where else can you get a juicy bison burger before the stroke of midnight?

Eureka!, which also has a location in Clovis that opened in 2023, has prided itself on offering unique burger experiences and avoids having a chain restaurant type of feel.

The restaurant offers a limited “Hoppy Hour” food menu that runs from 9 p.m. until close.

But why settle for something simple to eat when you can order a 28 day dry-aged bone marrow burger or a jalapeno egg burger? The truffle cheese fries are a popular selection, too.

Richie’s Pizza & Hot Dogs

Location: 844 E. Olive Avenue

Can get food as late as: 2:30 a.m. on Fridays/Saturdays

While the popular pizza parlor in the Tower District doesn’t provide indoor dining, it does have seating and tables along the sidewalk that was installed a few years ago as a way to conduct business during the pandemic.

Richie’s offers six different types of pizzas, though, for late-night eating, the menu typically gets reduced to either pepperoni or cheese.

Before food trucks started setting up shop around various spots in the Tower District, the line to get Richie’s thin, large slices of pizza would sometimes wrap around the building on super popular nights. But for the most part these days, the line usually moves fast and the wait is minimal.

“Pizza is great anytime of the day,” said Michael Otto, who’s worked at Richie’s the past five years. “We make our pizzas fresh. They’re not frozen. We sell by the slice, so you’re not committed to a full meal. But our slices are also large enough that it’ll fill you up.”

Yardhouse

Location: 90 El Camino

Can get food as late as: 12:30 a.m. on Fridays/Saturdays

Though Yard House has long been known for offering a variety of beer options on tap, it’s their food menu that’s grown substantially over the years from 40 to 140 choices.

Yardhouse also offers an enticing late happy hour menu that runs from 10 p.m.-12 a.m. with select appetizers half off the normal price, including fried calamari, chicken nachos and classic sliders.

All pizzas are 50% off, too, including a truffled mushroom pizza for those who prefer a vegetarian diet.

Just don’t expect to chug down a whole yard’s worth of beer with that late-night meal. Yard House eliminated its namesake yard-long beer glasses in 2005.
