It was always the intent that House of Pendragon return to Clovis.

For nearly a decade, the Sanger brewery made a lot of a small, 700-square-foot tasting room at a shopping center on Willow and Nees avenues. Some will remember cramming into the space for its popular weekly pub quiz night.

The brewery left that space in 2022 and made plans to find a larger replacement.

For awhile, it appeared House of Pendragon would be part of Loma Vista Marketplace, the shopping center under construction at Shaw and Leonard avenues in east Clovis. But those plans fizzled and the brewery turned to Old Town Clovis and a spot on Pollasky Avenue and Eighth Street at the end of a stretch of storefronts that includes the Sierra Nut House.

In January, the brewery announced it would be taking over the spot formerly occupied by The Craft House for a new concept restaurant/tap room.

House of Pendragon Beer Garden & BBQ has its soft opening Saturday.

As the name implies, this is more than a tap room. It’s “House of Pendragon energy, now with brisket,” to quote the social media.

Aside from beer, brewery owner/founder Tommy Caprelian has a thing for barbecue. He gets help here from Devin Rector, a chef with experience creating food for breweries.

The menu is central Texas barbecue, Caprelian told The Bee in January, hinting at options like brisket fries, brisket tacos and pulled pork nachos. And brisket is big on the menu — everything from a brisket BBQ sandwich, to loaded brisket mac n cheese and brisket chili.

Old Town Clovis beer garden in the works

This is a soft opening for the restaurant and tap room. A beer garden at the back of the building will double the seating capacity when it opens. That date is “coming soon,” according to the brewery.

But the brewery isn’t wasting any time getting up and running with special events and the like. Already it’s announced several, including the 11th Anniversary of its Pub Quiz. That happens Tuesday, Aug. 12 with sign-ups starting at 6:30 p.m. before the game at 7.

For the beer nerds, the restaurant hosts the Central Valley Brewers Guild West Coast IPA Throwdown on Aug. 9. The event is the second part of a three-part contest with dozen of local breweries serving up their best West Coast IPAs. Guests can take part in a blind tasting and cast votes to determine the People’s Choice Award. Tastings start at 4 p.m.
