Grizzlies Report for Sept. 5: Fresno 4, Salt Lake 2

Saturday recap: Jon Singleton registered his fourth multi-home run game of the year, launching a pair, and Mark Appel (5-2) struck out seven as Fresno beat Salt Lake 4-2 before an announced crowd of 8,202 at Chukchansi Park. Singleton’s two-run homer in the first traveled 414 feet. And his go-ahead solo homer in the third landed 453 feet away. Singleton now has 22 home runs despite a monthlong call-up to the Houston Astros. Appel limited the Bees to two runs on three hits and two walks in 6.2 innings. James Hoyt got the save with a scoreless ninth.

Grizzlies on Sunday: Fresno RH Mike Hauschild (6-5, 3.75 ERA) makes his final start of the regular season, looking to at least duplicate his efforts the last time he faced Salt Lake. Hauschild threw 5.1 scoreless innings in a 17-0 win June 14, limiting the Bees to three hits. He’ll face Bees LH Nate Smith (2-3, 6.82), who had a horrendous August (1-3, 8.00) but won his first start in September, allowing one run in six innings vs. Tacoma.

Aplin stays hot: Since the All-Star break, Grizzlies OF Andrew Aplin has significantly turned up his performance. His batting average splits before and after the break – .220 over 40 games vs. .340 in 32 games after a 1 for 2 night Saturday.

Stat of the day: 0 – Games difference in the standings between Las Vegas and El Paso in the Pacific Southern Division, after the 51s rallied for four runs in the final three innings to edge Tacoma 8-7, while the Chihuahuas erased their half-game deficit by winning a pair of seven-inning games in a doubleheader sweep at Reno. The champ of that division faces the Grizzlies next week to open the Pacific Coast League playoffs.
