The moment Northview High quarterback Steven Comstock was offered a scholarship by Fresno State, he knew he wanted to become a Bulldog.

He slept on it, but just for a day, with the Covina native and soon-to-be senior verbally committing to Fresno State for the 2018 recruiting class on Saturday afternoon.

“I was going to commit on the spot,” Comstock said Saturday. “But I wanted to sleep on it and make a good life decision because that’s going to change my life. It’s not something that I want to go off emotions. I wanted to make sure it was the right fit.

“It’s just far enough away from home where I can become a man on my own, but it’s close enough, too, that if anything happens I can get back in a quick manner.”

The three-star recruit by Scout.com said the relationship with the Bulldogs’ coaching staff built across several weeks, all the way to his unofficial visit Friday. Comstock, listed at 6 feet, 2 inches and 185 pounds, said it was a no-brainer to play for first-year coach Jeff Tedford.

“A coach like Coach Tedford, how can you pass that up the opportunity?” said Comstock, who holds offers from Oregon State, Idaho, Eastern Washington, UC Davis, Army and Azusa Pacific. “I mean that guy is second to none. I believe with that style of coaching and level of coaching, we can make some noise in the Mountain West in the next couple of years.”

Verbal commitments are nonbinding and players frequently change their minds until National Signing Day, which this year includes an early period for football beginning Dec. 20 and the regular period Feb. 7.

In 2016, Comstock completed 142 of 237 for 2,679 yards and 30 touchdowns. He ran 104 times for 830 yards and 14 TDs.

Even though the option remains to change his mind, Comstock said he’s fully committed to playing for the Bulldogs.

“I haven’t been able to get out to a game yet but I know I’ll probably be attending two or three this year, maybe four,” he said. “I’m really excited to really feel the energy. I know the ‘V’ is something very important … pride of the Valley. I’m excited to be a part of that tradition and family.”
