Fresno State welcomes 23 football recruits on national signing day

A look at Fresno State’s confirmed football signings on national letter of intent day for 2017, including midyear transfers, according to the Bulldogs athletic department.

One player flipped on his commitment, but first-year coach Jeff Tedford announced himself as pleased.

According to Bodie DeSilva of sandiegopreps.com, Quarterback Mark Salazar of Rancho Bernardo High-San Diego has signed with San Diego State. Salazar gave an oral commitment to former Bulldogs coach Tim DeRuyter in June.

“We’re really happy with the quality of our class and feel like we addressed some of our needs” Tedford said at a Wednesday afternoon news conference. “Our staff did a tremendous job.”

Tedford hailed the class’ heavy California ties, with 17 of the 23 having played high school or JC football in the state. He worked on short notice, hired to replace the fired Tim DeRuyter in November.

“With time constraints I thought our staff did a tremendous job of evaluating, establishing relationships and selling Fresno State.”

Including walk-ons, the coach said, there will be six quarterbacks competing for the starting job in spring practice.

“Spring ball will tell a lot as to how much this (recruiting) class contributes to this year’s team.”
