Letters to the Editor

‘Unfit.’ ‘Embarrassment.’ Letter writers cry out to voters in Devin Nunes’ district

The radioactive Devin Nunes memo that criticizes the FBI’s tactics put the Valley’s congressman in a white-hot national spotlight rarely experienced by local politicians. Email, letters and phone calls arrived in an avalanche to The Bee’s digital mailboxes and phones.

The addresses were not just from local people, but from up and down California and across the country. They came from as close as Modesto, Arizona and Oregon and as distant as Canada, Virginia, Florida, New Hampshire, and Minnesota. We could not begin to return all the phone calls, so we listened and took notes.

The tone and tenor of these letters to the editor were distinct from others we get every day. These were intended to speak directly to the voters in Nunes’ 22nd Congressional District. And these folks were not happy. They have serious issues.

Here is a sampling.

Spitefulness blinds him from seeing governance as shared service

Please, citizens of Tulare, Visalia, and Clovis, bring Rep. Devin Nunes back home where he belongs. He isn’t needed in Congress anymore.

He has blighted the good image of the 22nd Congressional District, and the real water carriers of the San Joaquin Valley, by not sharing crucial information with all his colleagues on the House Intelligence Committee. Instead he shared it with Donald Trump, when the president himself and members of his administration are the subjects of criminal investigation.

He has contaminated one of the most contentious episodes in American history of substantiated Russian interference in our elections. His memo is worthy only of ridicule and scorn for its abuse of our FBI. His partisan ideology blinds him from seeing governance as a shared responsibility in the national interest.

Keep him on the family dairy farm, where, hopefully, the milk of human kindness will seep in and dilute his factional spitefulness.

Don Sharpes, Walnut Creek

Your children will pay the price

Devin Nunes, intelligence committee chairman: How can anything be more opposite? Nunes has shown zero intelligence, only a political ambition that would sacrifice the country for his personal gain in an attempt to further his political career. Nunes is a disgrace to all Americans, not only the voters of Fresno and Tulare counties.

Are the people of Fresno and Tulare Counties so unaware of the crisis we face in this country which threatens our democratic free system of government?

I am a veteran and registered Independent who votes for the individual and ideals that I believe in, . I vote across party lines. I can only hope the voters of Fresno and Tulare counties will fairly evaluate the job Nunes has done in Congress and vote accordingly. Don’t just vote a party line because your children will pay the price.

It is clear that the U. S. position as the leading world power is being severely challenged. It is time to wake up, resolve differences and unite as a society to protect our heritage.

All one can ask is that voters intelligently study the issues and Nunes’ performance and vote his/her conscience, recalling our forebears sacrifices as well as the consequences of giving Nunes another term in Congress.

‘So very sorry’ for harm, shame he caused you

Devin Nunes has caused irreparable harm and shame upon your communities and his constituents.

His alliance with Rep. Paul Ryan and the president to push for and release the memo is something that will go down in history. History is nonforgiving as it can never be erased.

He will become infamous and as a result, your communities he represents will have the same fate. For this, I can’t help feeling so very sorry, not only for the damage he has done to our democracy, but to the damage he has done to your communities.

Unfortunately, you will probably suffer the same infamous fate by forever being known as “Devin Nunes’ district.”

Veteran says it’s time to go: ‘Resign’

Rep. Devin Nunes owes it to his constituents and the people of the United States to resign.

Nunes committed an intentional wrongful act in March when he obtained documentation from the White House to try and undermine the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation of Russia’s interference in our general election.

He later recused himself from participating in the investigation. However, he continued to secretly attempt to undermine the investigation. His latest attempt to undermine the investigation by the Special Counsel is another wrongful act; and one in which the FBI and Justice Department said he was being reckless.

Mr. Nunes has violated his oath to uphold the Constitution.

Is he more interested in Russia’s interests than ours? It appears that way.

As a United States citizen who fought to defend this country, I am calling on him to resign.

Glenn Boldenow, Commerce City

‘Dangerous’ Nunes lacks knowledge to do oversight

It is very dangerous when a person with oversight of intelligence has no understanding of how intelligence gathering works.

Is Devin Nunes really as stupid as he is behaving? Does he want to degrade and cripple our intelligence agencies and compromise our national security the same way the degradation of the State Department has already done?

It appears that President Trump and his co-conspirators share an agenda with the Russians. I despair at how stubbornly foolish and blind many Americans are.

Thank God for newspapers.

Eric Hanson, Minneapolis

Teach him oath of office or send someone else

Rep. Devin Nunes and I took a similar oath. We both swore to defend against all enemies foreign and domestic.

I do not understand how he thinks he is fulfilling that oath by attacking our government and its agencies. Any veterans out there who can school him on what his oath actually means? If not, please send someone else to D.C.

Annette Hendricks, Modesto, U.S. Navy (retired)

‘You need to fix this mess’

It is the responsibility of voters in the 22nd California District to address the damage caused by Devin Nunes. He is an embarrassment to the nation, and especially to all of you, residents of the 22nd District. You elected Nunes and you need to fix this mess.

Elect someone who is fair, who respects the law, who will strive to be a statesman, someone who will put country first, who you can point to as a role model for your children and grandchildren.

The nation is watching. Do not re-elect Nunes.

John Mapes, Eugene, Oregon

‘Most morally corrupt’ ever to represent 22nd

Rep. Devin Nunes, is the most morally corrupt congressperson ever to serve the 22nd Congressional District.

For the second time in a year, he has tried to subvert our democracy. He should be brought before the ethics committee for his actions.

He is unfit to serve in any capacity, and should be forced to resign.

Phil Oleisky, Minneapolis

Remove Nunes from Congress, help America!

Your Congressman Devin Nunes needs to be removed from the U.S. Congress! Our democratic republic is too important for his activities to continue. Please, help America!

I live in Illinois’ 13th Congressional District, and I don't think my congressman Rodney Davis is voting to reflect the people of this part of the state of Illinois.

My concerns about your congressman have been increasing over time.
