Feinstein is right to close ‘bump’ loophole for weapons

Sen. Dianne Feinstein introduced legislation to close “automatic weapons loophole” after Las Vegas shooting (story, Oct. 4)

After the recent tragedy in Las Vegas, 58 people were slain and 489 are left wounded. The assailant used at least one semi-automatic weapon with a bump to convert it into a fully automatic firearm.

When our society has endured such a heinous act of violence, we tend to ask ourselves what, why, when, where, how? We know what happened, where it happened and we know when it happened but why and how did this massacre happen?

When our Founding Fathers composed the Declaration of Independence in the second paragraph of the first article, they wrote three examples of unalienable rights “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” in which the governments are created to protect. When did we let our society get to this point where civilians can make semi-automatic firearms into fully automatic, military-grade weapons?

We are taking away unalienable rights by not having laws that could prevent such tragedies from happening. I stand with Feinstein in closing the loophole to purchase a bump to convert semi-automatic firearms into fully automatic weapons.
