Sheriff’s deputy shoots suspect who attacked him near Tulare, authorities say

A sheriff’s deputy shot a male suspect who allegedly attacked him during a traffic stop west of Tulare on Saturday, the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office said.

Around noon a deputy pulled over a suspect at Avenue 228 and Road 36, who then began to assault the deputy, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office said that during the struggle the deputy hit the suspect and then shot him.

The suspect, whose identity was not made public, was taken to a nearby hospital where he was reported in stable condition Saturday afternoon. Charges are pending, sheriff’s spokeswoman Teresa Douglass said.

Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux has asked the Tulare Police Department to investigate the shooting.

The deputy was not identified by name Saturday but is a six-year veteran with the department. He was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries and released. He will be on paid leave during the investigation of the shooting.
