Clovis West High School teacher Pete Martinez Arguijo, 40, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor, Fresno police said Friday.

Arguijo, who teaches math at the school, was taken into custody at his home and booked into Fresno County Jail. He has since been released on $30,000 bail.

Police spokesman Mark Hudson said the crime occurred earlier this year and police do not have “any indication of sexual misconduct between Arguijo and students” at Clovis West.

Clovis Unified spokeswoman Kelly Avants said a decision to place Arguijo on leave was made after the district learned of his arrest.

“We will work closely with law enforcement to be sure that any and all appropriate action is taken by the district,” Avants said. “We know little about the situation at this time, and the employee in question has been on summer break from his teaching position since early June.”

“The arrest is deeply concerning to the school and district administration and will be treated with the utmost seriousness,” Avants said.
