Teresa Ann Andrade Madrigal, 48, is a suspect in a stabbing on a Greyhound bus that injured five people on March 5, 2018.

A fight on a Greyhound bus between two women, one with a knife and the other trying to protect her 3-year-old child, resulted in several injuries and forced the driver to stop the bus on Highway 99 just outside Visalia.

The fight broke out Monday afternoon as the bus was heading north on Highway 99, the Tulare County Sheriff's Department said.

There were five victims, including the 3-year-old and her mother.

Three victims were taken to Kaweah Delta Medical Center. The suspect, 48-year-old Teresa Ann Andrade Madrigal, was acting delusional, was also taken to the hospital and was in surgery as of late afternoon Monday.

Madrigal grabbed the 3-year-old girl, the sheriff's department said. The girl's mother went to rescue her and was stabbed in the stomach but kept fighting for her daughter, and was in surgery Monday.

Madrigal purposely stabbed herself with the knife. She had threatened to kill the 3-year-old, the sheriff's office said.

The bus had 12 passengers and was driving north from Bakersfield.

Two male passengers and the bus driver intervened, the sheriff's department said. One passenger was slashed in the hand and needed stitches. The bus driver pulled over on Highway 99 and the bus was moved to the gas station at Highway 99 and Avenue 280.
