One dead, another wounded after car-to-car shooting in southeast Fresno

One person is dead and a second is in the hospital after their car was fired on late Sunday night in southeast Fresno.

Police believe the shooting may be gang-related.

According to police and initial news reports, the victims ended up at Cedar and Huntington avenues after their car was fired on multiple times along Cedar Avenue about 11:45 p.m. Lt. Carl McKnight said shell casings were found at multiple locations along Cedar.

Shotspotter technology determined a shot being fired in the area of Cedar and Balch avenues about two minutes before a 9-1-1 call was made to police dispatch.

After the victims arrived at Community Regional Medical Center, they were taken into surgery for their injuries. Police Sgt. Larry Bowlan said one of the victims, 21-year-old Francisco Vargas, died from his wounds. The other victim was a male juvenile who was shot in the leg and was in stable condition after surgery.

Detectives interviewed people at the hospital who knew the victims, but no leads were developed from their information.
