Man threatened CHP officers with knife before they shot him
A man who was shot several times by California Highway Patrol officers Saturday morning in Madera County has been identified as 24-year-old Carlos Solis from Redwood City.
Solis was shot after he allegedly charged at the officers with a knife following a chase, the Madera County Sheriff’s Office reported.
Solis is recovering in a Fresno hospital and is in stable condition, the sheriff’s office said. He will be booked in Madera County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder of a peace officer upon his release from the hospital.
CHP officers began chasing Solis after they saw him speeding on Highway 152 at 7:26 a.m. The chase continued onto Highway 99 until the driver exited on Avenue 9. Spokeswoman Kayla Serrato said Solis got out of the car with a knife. She said the officers used a stun gun to restrain him, but had no success.
Solis then allegedly charged at CHP officers with the knife and was injured when the officers shot him several times, Serrato said. The officers were not injured in the confrontation.
The shooting happened in the area of Avenue 9 and Road 38, east of Valley Children’s Hospital.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Madera County Sheriff’s Office at 559-675-7770 or Crime Stoppers at 559-498-7867.
