A man found dead behind Round Table Pizza near First and Bullard avenues on Wednesday morning was shot, Fresno police said Thursday.

He was identified Thursday afternoon as Jonathan Mahaffey, 59, of Fresno.

Officers were called to the northeast Fresno shopping center around 8:18 a.m. to check on a man who was on the ground, not breathing. Emergency medical service personnel tried to render aid but he was already dead, police said.

Mahaffey was taken to the Fresno County Coroner’s office where an X-ray showed he had been shot.

The shooting does not appear to be gang-related, police said. The case is under investigation. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 559-498-7867 or detectives Miguel Alvarez at 559-621-2441 and David Porcella at 559-621-2449.
